If you missed the live broadcast of your favourite shows on the Ten network’s selection of free-to-air channels, Ten, Eleven and One, you’ve been able to watch them via the tenplay catchup service for some time now, on various devices including smartphones, tablets, PCs, smart TVs, Apple TV and games consoles.
Now Telstra’s new streaming device, Telstra TV, joins the tenplay fray, with Network Ten’s Chief Digital Officer, Rebekah Horne, having said: “From today, Telstra TV will provide immediate and seamless access to Network Ten’s catch-up and streaming product, anytime and for free.
“Telstra TV is a great opportunity for streaming growth and is the next step in tenplay’s cross-platform strategy, offering a first-class viewing experience wherever our audiences are.
“Some of our biggest and most compelling entertainment, drama, comedy and sport programs are available to watch straight away on Telstra TV, including MasterChef Australia, TBL Families, The Project 7pm, Mary: The Making Of A Princess, The 2015 ARIA Awards, Homeland, Madam Secretary, The Good Wife and Neighbours.
“In 2016, viewers can look forward to even more innovative and exciting new content, including hit programs, I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! and its new companion show I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! Now, Shark Tank, MasterChef Australia, The Bachelor Australia and Offspring, along with our big new shows such as Australian Survivor, Brock, The Wrong Girl and Long Lost Family.”
Serkan Honeine, Telstra Director, At Home Media, said: “We are very pleased that the terrific tenplay app is now available on Telstra TV alongside the other television catch up services. “Telstra TV is the simple way to stream your favourite television on demand and now there’s even more content for Telstra customers to enjoy.”

tenplay on Telstra TV is the latest addition to Network Ten’s so-called ‘TV Everywhere’ strategy, although once Network Ten gets truly serious about this strategy, it will start live streaming its broadcasts rather than ‘just’ relying on now less impressive catch-up only services.
After all, catching up is great if you’ve missed a broadcast, but if you’re there when the broadcast is being aired live and you’re not next to a TV, why not use the incredible multimedia device that you have with you, especially if you have access to bandwidth?
Channel 7 already offers live streaming of its TV networks and Channel 9 is gearing up to do the same in 2016, so Network Ten is once again the laggard in the TV race - lift your game, TV people!
To this end, the Ten Network’s CDO Rebekah Horne does say that “In 2016, tenplay will continue to grow its distribution, content and functionality, including more live streaming of big prime-time shows and expanding across more platforms,” so clearly someone over there is thinking ahead, but until the entire service goes live streaming it’s a half-measure. Sorry to be so harsh, but it’s 2015, not 1815.
In any case, Network Ten boasts that, since its launch in September 2013, tenplay has become very popular with Australians, boasting more than 2.35 million downloads of its mobile app.
