Foxtel is declaring ‘history has been made’ now that the final numbers for season 6 GoT premiere viewership - a ‘landmark 1,224,000’ viewers - ‘the biggest audience in Australian Subscription TV history across sport and non-sport programming.’
The premiere aired on Foxtel’s showcase channel on Monday, April 25.
So, how does Foxtel collate the numbers?
We’re told that ‘the cumulative audience comprises live viewing, time-shifted playback and viewing via Foxtel Anytime over the first seven days that follow the initial premiere broadcast.’
As previously reported at iTWire the day after the premiere aired, the initial overnight numbers for episode 1 achieved a total audience of 727,000, 31% larger than season 5, claiming the biggest single day audience in Australian Subscription Television history.
However, at 1,224,000, the cumulative audience for episode 1 maintained the pace and exceeded the season 5 opener’s cumulative audience by 33%.

Foxtel has shared some additional details for the Game of Thrones season 6 premiere:
- US and UK audiences have posted similar audience gains for Game of Thrones but not at the same incredible pace experienced in Australia.
- With over 1.2 million viewers for season 6, the audience is up 33% on season 5 and 7 times that of season 1 (168,000).
- Game of Thrones season 6 screens Mondays at 11am AEST (same time as the US) with a primetime encore at 7.30pm AEST, 'only on showcase'.
