Monday, 14th June 2010 - SMH

Australia is one of only two developed countries where the take-up of broadband internet connections declined last year, new figures show.

Nothing to do with the government. Partly population density, mostly the lack of a competitive market...

It has everything to do with the government. When Labor corporatised Telstra they put the network and the retail arms in to a single corporation. The Liberal government then sold the network and the retail arms of Telstra as a single entity. Net result is that we have a massive corporation which has a vested interest in keeping the competition weak. Not knocking Telstra as their board is only doing what they are required to do in order to grow share holder capital. Past bad judgment by both major parties means that the only way forward is for the tax payer funded NBN to inject some competition - if we can wait 8 years.

Canberra exchange 1.5km away, I only get max 420kbps download on 24MB ADSL2+ plan. A sad state our country is in. Yet our government want to slow it down further with a internet filter.

I'm supposedly on 1.4 mbps. I just did a speed test on my internet connection, took forever to load a simple text only page and it only did the test at 1 kb/s. My internet hasn't been very good today, I think I've blown my monthly quta but Ifind that hard to believe as I'm only 2 weeks into thwe month, by the way I'm with optus. NOT HAPPY AT ALL!

Have you sought technical support from your ISP?

Yes, I did. The only solution offered by ISP was to cancel the contract without incurring any penalty fees. I was also told that shifting to another provider, won't improve my ADSL speed at all. This is apparently due to congestion at Telstra exchange in Pakenham.

No way - that's a lie. If Telstra congestion was to the point you were getting that speed, Telstra would have done something to fix the problem. This is far slower than the speed Telstra guarantee as a minimum for acceptable ADSL speed.

Is it possible there is an issue with your internal wiring? Or have you had a Telstra tech out to check your line from the exchange to your home?

I am not sure who's lying. Nevertheless, these are the facts. I've checked my speed 5 mins ago and it's 45kbps????. Yes, this issues has been escalated to the higher level of Cust Support and I had a Telstra tech out to check my line. No solution so far. Any clues?

Download speed is supposed to be ADSL2+ but the speed has dropped to around 70kb. 1/10th the speed it is supposed to be. I am less than 1km from the local exchange. What gives?

It is wrong that dedicated-line ADSL2 is almost as slow as shared-spectrum wireless. We are probably throttled by high contention on the back-haul where high carrier charges force ISPs to struggle to balance their profitability. The NBN with faster connections to customers will not solve this trunk congestion. It will probably make it worse. The NBN spruiks "open networks", which is another deception. It will only be open for providers. It will remain "closed" with the same old lock-in contracts, speed limits, capacity limits and confusing plans for the users.

Hmmm it all seems funny ey. I have a connection with Adam internet and my average download speed is sitting at 11mbps. the connection speed is about 20-25mbps i think? upload is only about 1mbps though.

Way better than the days with bigpond. So if your in adelaide adam and internode are to go. if your in another state try look at some of your old local isp's you wouldn't believe how good they are.

I Think some people are confused.
I am with iPrimus and my THEORITICAL line speed is 24MB down load and 1MB upload.
However, because i dont live inside the ruddy exchange my actual line speed is 8MB.
This because of interference, distance etc.

My DOWNLOAD speed which is different from the line seped is 970kbs. This is above average for Australian standards. None of my friends get this download speed. So i doubt anyone in Australia is getting 5000kbps or 11mbps download as noted above. That is their line speed. 5MBps is below ave and 11MBps is above ave. If they are copy and paste the test here and i will disconnect with my provider immediately and join yours.

Your download speed is about 1/8th of your line speed.

I've lost count of the number of mums and dads that think they should be downloading an 800MB movie at 20MBps. Op[tus and Telstra no doubt play on this with their advertising.
Im happy with my Primus plan and wouldnt touch Telstra and Optus at all.
TPG also have a very good deal. 500GB for $60 and $1 home phone rental. I cant get it but my father has it and they hav 850kbps download

Be wary of deals on TV. Dodo offer unlimited download but they dont tell you your download speed is reduced after you have downloaded 50GB. My brother who has a dipmoma in IT didnt't realise this was happening to him!

Go to ozspeed test for a line and download speed test.
Also remember sights you are downloading from limit their upload speed. So even if you have 900kbps you might only get 100kbps d/l speed. That is the uploader not the ISP.

Hope this helps some.
I know i was angry with my speeds until the confusion was unravelled. At least I now Know Australian broadband plans are inferior but i know what I'm paying for.

B = Bytes
b = bits

So your download is 970 KB/s and your line speed is 8 Mbps.

i'm with Primus..and lately their product has sucked..i dont know all the techical jargon..all i know is...4 weeks ago my internet worked not too bad...it was enough for me..and now..it barely loads pages...and each time i call them..i get a different explanation..the techs been to check the line..its ok ...and they've had me run all sorts of tests..the speedtests dont even load..they've admiited theres a problem but say they dont know what it is..and want to keep going with esting..this has been 3 weeks now..had a new modem..and nothings worked..so i'm cancelling..and trying to find a new ISP..but its very confusing for someone like me who isnt up on all the computer and internet stuff...to understand all the different plans and all on offer..but i do know..i'm paying good money for a rotten service.

Am i the only person not complaining. I did a speed test at 80,000 kbps at speedtest.net. Then again, i do pay an awful lot for internet.
