New Year's Eve 2018: Telstra predicts 91 million messages and 39 million calls Featured

By

Telstra has predicted a new New Year's Eve record for data usage on its mobile network, with 2300TB to be used.

The telco says that "Aussies will do this through the use of social video applications, growing demand for entertainment and increasing access to high-speed 4G and 4GX technology".

"Telstra is predicting 2300 TB of data will be downloaded and shared over the New Year’s Eve period (31 December to 1 January) on its mobile network alone – equivalent to one person continuously watching over 300 years of High Definition content and 53% more than the same period in 2017.

"The peak hour for sending SMS messages is expected to be between midnight and 1am on New Year’s Day, with around 4 million text messages to be sent by Telstra customers."

So, what are some of Telstra's other predictions for New Year's Eve 2018?

  • 2300 TB of data will be used on its mobile network
  • 39 million calls from mobiles
  • 91 million messages; peak hour for sending SMS messages is expected to be between midnight and 1am #happynewyear
  • In the Sydney Harbour area, Telstra expects over 16.2 terabytes of data traffic between 31/12 and 1/1

Why is this the case? Telstra's Network Engineering executive, Channa Seneviratne, said: "Simply, we love to share moment of celebrations with our families and friends.

“The festive season is a special time of the year to connect with family and friends. The prominence of instant video capture applications like Instagram and Snapchat, as well as increasing access to high-speed 4G and 4GX technology, is helping to bring families and friends closer on New Year’s Eve even when they are celebrating the day apart.

"We have seen data usage on our mobile network continue to grow throughout the year and we predict that trend to continue when compared to data usage over the same period last year.

"Whether it’s watching fireworks displays, having a BBQ with family and friends, or a night on the town, we love to share those celebrations with our families and friends.”
