Samsung to deliver Galaxy S10 5G, its first 5G device, from 28 May

By

Samsung's S10 5G will be the first 5G smartphone to go on sale in Australia. Set to be available via Telstra and Samsung's own Experience Stores from 28 May, and a free upgrade for select Telstra S10+ customers earlier this year, the S10 5G will also feature a 6.7-inch screen, bigger battery and the promise of "an incredible camera experience".

Also, those who purchased an S10+ from Telstra earlier this year during the free S10 5G upgrade eligibility period, will have 21 days from May 28 to redeem the remarkable offer.

As you can imagine, Samsung has ensured its new S10 5G smartphone "builds on the most popular features of the Galaxy S10 range which celebrates a decade since the launch of the first Galaxy smartphone".

Samsung explains the S10 5G "has been designed for users who want access to the ultimate in Samsung device performance and combines 5G and 4GX network capabilities to help provide customers with high-speed mobile wherever 5G and 4GX is available", while also delivering "the richest feature set ever offered in a Galaxy smartphone, including a 6.7-inch Infinity-O Display, 4,500mAh battery with Super Fast charging capability, and an incredible camera experience".

While there is no 5x optical or 10x hybrid zoom as seen on the Huawei P30 Pro, Samsung can still boast of "six cameras enhanced with intelligence so users can take incredible photos and video", while offering a 2x optical zoom.

One of the flagship features is a 16MP Ultra Wide Camera that captures a 123 degree field of vision "so users can photograph a stunning range of content from expansive landscapes, to fun social settings. The camera also offers Live Focus video which helps to focus and create bokeh effects to make the subject stand out".

There also the "new 3D Depth Camera, users can also detect depth, distance, height and length of objects within in the camera’s vision using Quick Measure".

All up, these features have seen the S10 5G earn a DxOMark score of 112, matching the Huawei P30 Pro and beating the S10+ score of 109.

The Notebookcheck website notes that the S10 5G has a photography score of 117, compared with the P30 Pro's score of 119, and has "the second best zoom score" of 74 (behind the P30 Pro), beating the Mate 20 Pro at 70 and the P20 Pro at 73.

When it comes to video, Samsung notes the S10 5G's score was 100, which Notebookcheck notes is better than the P30 Pro, Mate 20 Pro and S10+, and as Samsung states, the selfie camera scored 97, which Notebookcheck adds "makes it the best selfie smartphone in the world".

Garry McGregor, vice-president of IT and Mobile at Samsung Electronics Australia, said: “The Galaxy S10 5G is designed to perform at a level that we have never before seen in a Samsung device.

"From its 3D Depth Camera to 5G network capability, we’re delivering the ultimate in terms of innovation, design, and experience.

”This is the most anticipated device Samsung has ever launched in Australia as it combines additions to our amazing Galaxy range but also opens the door to the opportunities that 5G experiences will bring people in future.

“With this upcoming launch, we are delivering on years of collaboration with Telstra to help break new ground in device and network performance,” McGregor added.

Telstra Consumer Segment executive Kevin Teoh said the launch of Australia’s first 5G-enabled smartphone would mark the beginning of a new mobile era.

Teoh said: “This will be a game-changing moment for our customers. Telstra has been building Australia’s first 5G technology for some time, and now our customers are ready to be the first in Australia to experience this technology in the areas where 5G is now available.

“5G-enabled devices are the next step towards customers experiencing the potential of this revolutionary network technology.

"Faster downloads, high resolution video streaming with less buffering and better mobile gaming on the go are just the start of the network technology’s possibilities. 5G also has the potential to transform the way we all live and work.”

Out-of-the-box, Samsung promises its Galaxy S10 5G "will also unlock new experiences for customers thanks to high speed download speeds made possible through the 5G network.

"For example, the ability to download a full-length feature movie to your mobile device in seconds and enhancing applications that demand high volumes of data like AR, VR, gaming and video conferencing.

"The device will be available with 256GB or 512GB memory variants. Two colour options will also be available, these being Crown Silver for the 256GB variant, or Majestic Black for the 256GB and 512GB variants".

There is no MicroSD slot for additional expansion for the camera, other digital media files and any other file you want to have on hand, which is a shame, so if you want to store more, the 512GB model will be the one to get - even though it will obviously cost extra. There's also the question as to when Samsung will release a 5G capable Note 10 model for those who want a stylus, but all of that is still in the future.

Mobile plans will be announced closer to the local on-sale date of May 28, so sit tight - those details are coming soon.

GSMArena has a list of specs for the S10 5G here with the official Australian specs to presumably be made public at Samsung's Australian site here sometime between now and the 28th of May.

So, Australia's first 5G phone has arrived, and while it will inevitably be joined by other 5G flagships in the future, the first past the 5G post is Samsung and those who buy it!
