Telstra pumps millions of dollars into Adelaide Oval Featured

Australia's biggest telco Telstra has unveiled plans to turn Adelaide Oval into one of the country's most technically advanced connected stadiums, through a boost in mobile capacity and a 'Telstra Plaza' upgrade.

Working with Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority, Telstra said it will deliver increased mobile capacity as well as "improve the spectator experience."

This includes a full upgrade to the main entrance off War Memorial Drive, where 70% of patrons enter the ground, which will be renamed the Telstra Plaza.

Adelaide Oval has recently undergone a $535M redevelopment, as one of the most anticipated rejuvenation projects in South Australia, and it's believed Telstra's investment is around the $7 million mark.

Telstra said the investment will see it upgrade the existing mobile coverage at the venue and surrounding areas to provide more mobile capacity for fans, while the stadium will also be home to Telstra’s IPTV (Internet Protocol television) solution which will see more than 1000 screens installed at the Oval.

Patrons of the oval, which is expecting 1.4 million visitors this year, will be able to use the screens to watch high definition replays, order food and drinks, and keep track of match statistics as the action unfolds.

“Fans want to be connected to their favourite sporting events. The newly installed screens create interactive opportunities for businesses and patrons alike, making Adelaide Oval one of Australia’s most technically advanced stadiums,” Mr. Thodey added. “It’s exciting to be part of a new digital future for South Australia.”

John Olsen, Chairman of the Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority, said "From day one, providing the best fan experience has been our goal at Adelaide Oval, and Telstra has both the innovation and technical capabilities to deliver quality outcomes and ensure we achieve our goal to become one of the world's greatest sporting ovals."

"This investment allows us to take the fan's experience to another level with significant improvements to the Oval's mobile coverage. Football fans in particular tend to be big data users, so this increased capacity will be great news for the tens of thousands who come to watch AFL football here every week," Olsen said.
