Optus beefs up home bundles

By

New home phone and internet bundles from Optus include Fetch TV.

Optus has announced a pair of new bundles aimed at households that want to keep their home phones.

The Big Home Bundle combines unlimited broadband, phone service with unlimited standard calls within Australia, Optus TV with Fetch (Connect pack), and a Samsung Tab S 8.4in tablet.

It costs $115 a month on a two-year contract, the same as the existing 'unlimited data including Optus TV with Fetch' bundle, but that one doesn't include the tablet - which is probably why there's no indication that the monthly fee will be reduced once the initial contract ends and the price of the tablet has been paid off.

The Fetch Connect pack provides a PVR that can be used to record free-to-air programs, access to a list of 30 movies each month, and the ability to rent additional movies.

An extra $15 a month buys the Entertainment Pack, which includes more than 30 channels including Disney, MTV and National Geographic.

The Big Home Bundle is available regardless of whether the premises are served by Optus Cable, ADSL2+, or NBN fibre. In the latter case it would be worth checking what speed Optus will give you before you sign up - the equivalent plan without the tablet is limited to 25Mbps unless you pay an extra $10 a month for 50Mbps or $20 for 100Mbps, but Optus didn't mention this in its announcement.

If $115 is a bit rich for you, you don't download much and you don't spend a lot on phone calls, Optus has added to its $90 a month bundle (200MB of data, pay for the calls you make) with a $75 bundle offering 50GB of data, the Fetch Connect pack, and a phone line. Again, you pay for the calls you make, but you can get an extra 50GB of data twice a year at no extra charge. Further top-ups to avoid being throttled to 265kbps cost $20 each.

There are no connection, delivery or modem fees on these bundles.

"We're really excited to be able to give our customers the freedom to watch what they want, wherever they are in the home. With our multi-screen Big Home Bundle we're making it even easier to stay connected at home or on the go," said Optus vice president of fixed products Sue Bailey.

At the time of writing the relevant page on the Optus web site had not been updated with the details of the new plans.
