Telstra brings data, Presto upgrades to mobile plans, too Featured

By

Last week it was more data for fixed broadband, now select mobile plans are getting more data and six months free Presto - but no unmetering.

On the day that Samsung introduces its Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge to Australia, Telstra is upgrading select mobile plans in Australia, with more data and six months free Presto, but the upgrades won’t go live until Thursday 9 April 2015 - and there’s no unmetering on 3G/NextG/4G networks for Presto content.

Telstra’s onslaught against fixed, mobile and streaming competitions continues at full blast following its announcement of updated data plans for fixed broadband customers along with six months of free Presto access.

The latest string to Telstra’s competitive bow strikes at the heart of the mobility space and competitor offers touting extra data.

Now, Telstra is offering to boost the data allows for Mobile Accelerate Plans, Mobile Accelerate BYO, Casual Plans and some Easy Share Business Plans.

Let’s start with new Telstra customers from 9 April taking up one of of two Mobile Accelerate Plans with a new handset, who will now enjoy a boost to their data allowance for the life of their contract.

Telstra explains that customers taking up its $95 Mobile Accelerate Plan will receive a bonus 3.5GB of data for a total data allowance of 6GB per month to use in Australia. (Min cost $2280 over 24 months, excess data 3c/MB).

Likewise, customers taking up the $130 Mobile Accelerate Plan will also receive a bonus - 7GB of data for a total data allowance of 10GB per month to use in Australia. (Min cost $3120 over 24 months, excess data 3c/MB).

You can see Telstra’s pricing tables at the end of this article for more detail, and naturally, Telstra’s website is likely to be updated with these details by the time you read this (although that wasn't the case as yet at the time of publishing at midnight this (Monday) morning).

Then Telstra targets its small business customers who take up the $65 per month (or higher) ‘Easy Share Business Plan’ with a new handset.

These customers will ‘receive bonus data ranging between 500MB a 6GB to use in Australia depending on the plan level they take up. (Min cost $1560 over 24 months, excess data 3c/MB). The data boost is available for a limited time to new and re-contracting small business and consumer customers taking up these plans.’

Then there’s the Mobile Accelerate BYO and Casual Plans, which Telstra says from 9 April makes them ‘more attractive than ever for customers to bring their own compatible handset and connect it to Australia’s best mobile network.’

Telstra touts data boosts between 500MB and 7GB per month for the life of the contract, depending on the plan level chosen by the customer, for use in Australia.

And of course there’s a free six-month subscription to Presto TV and movie streaming ‘with every Mobile Accelerate Plan and Business Easy Share Plan from 9 April.’

John Chambers, Telstra’s ED of Mobile said: “We want to cater to our customers’ ever-growing love of sharing, surfing and streaming while on the go. That’s why we’re offering more data on some of our most popular plans.

“And, to help our customers experience the streaming video revolution, we’re also giving people taking up new mobile plans a bonus 6-month Presto subscription. Customers can enjoy Presto on their compatible desktop, laptop, TV (via Chromecast), tablet or mobile.

“With the 6 months’ bonus Presto subscription, customers can watch a great range of TV shows and movies on- demand and on-the-go, such as Modern Family, Sons of Anarchy, Ray Donovan and Girls.”

As previously noted, there’s no unmetering on 3G/4G networks - as Tesltra says, “Data charges apply when streaming Presto over mobile networks.”

Telstra also goes on to talk up its super fast 4GX network (when in 4GX coverage areas using a 4GX compatible device), as well ‘unlimited calls SMS and MMS plus 25GB of data for use in Australia in the first month so customers can set up and explore their new smartphone with plenty of data.’

You get also those upgraded ‘real-time mobile data alerts that notify customers when they have used 50 per cent, 85 per cent and 100 per cent of their included data allowance.’

Telstra’s pricing and data inclusion tables for select mobile plans are listed below.
