Australian telco TPG claims a "sizeable number" of Internet users are suffering from connectivity problems and feel "a real need for speed".

In a statement on Tuesday, the company said its first Crappy Internet Report, conducted along with data and insights organisation Pureprofile, had surveyed 1000 users within Australia and found that 46% of users wanted better speeds and more reliable connections.

TPG is using the survey results to plug a recently announced Fibre Upgrade program which is being run in collaboration with NBN Co.

The survey found that a quarter experienced one to five dropouts while using the Internet, with the worst home areas being the bedroom, living room and toilet.

TPG head of Fixed Product Commercial Sammi Te said: “The good news is, with a healthy dose of TPG Fibre, you can flush away those crappy Internet problems once and for all.

“A TPG Fibre Upgrade offers superior speed and reliability compared to the ancient, copper broadband lines so many millions of Australians rely on.

"With full fibre you can access download speeds more than 10 times faster than the average home broadband service, making it the perfect connection for online gamers, large families with lots of users, or YouTube stars creating content for their legions of fans.”

The survey found that 47% of those who responded were willing to pay between $20 and $40 more each week for a stable and fast connection, while a smaller percentage, 36%, were willing to fork out between $40 and $60 a week for what was referred to as "great Internet".

The survey found:

  • 28% restarted their router or modem every month, while 23% had felt like throwing their router out the window at least once a month.
  • 42% said their connections worked perfectly most of the time, but 23% said their connection slowed to a crawl during peak usage times.
  • Among those suffering constant connectivity problems, 11% said their connection was “slower than a tortoise”, while another 14% said their connections disappeared when they were most needed.
  • When asked to describe what an ideal Internet connection was, 42% said they wanted a “stable, reliable” connection with no unexpected interruptions.

“With more people working, learning and being entertained from home, having a reliable Internet connection is more important than ever," Te said.

"Demand for our Fibre Upgrade program has gone through the roof with more than 20,000 customers signing up and flushing away bad speeds and unreliable internet for good."

Under the program, TPG has offered an upgrade bonus for those who switch their NBN FttN or FttC service to NBN FttP.

When a new customer switches to TPG with a Fibre Upgrade, the company is offering a one-off credit of $250 towards monthly bills. Existing TPG customers who upgrade NBN services to fibre are being offered a one-off credit of $100.
